In 1772, Carl Thunberg discovered that rooibos was one of the plants used as a medicinal herb in South Africa.

In the early 1900s, a Russian settler developed a method for processing tiny leaves of rooibos similar to Chinese black tea, allowing them to completely oxidize to develop a natural sweetness and more intense flavor.

In 1930 the major cultivation began after overcoming the difficulty in gathering the tiny seeds.
